Here are 8 ways to increase website traffic
However the focus of today’s post is PINTEREST.
Pinterest can be the most valuable source of traffic generation for your website if you know how to actually use it.
What is Pinterest (FOR THOSE STILL UNFAMILIAR WITH IT)
Commonly Pinterest is considered to be a social media network, however its definitely something much bigger than that. In the beginning I assumed Facebook to be the most productive and effective medium to promote your website. Don’t get me wrong, Facebook is an excellent means to interact with thousands of users, share and promote your content and build a community.
But when I used to read blog income and traffic reports by some of the top bloggers I discovered something amazing. For many of them the #1 source of traffic was Pinterest. And this doesn’t hold true only for probloggers but also people who are new to the blogging world.
So this is when I decided I should also leverage on this opportunity and learn as much as I can the various Pinterest strategies. I have learnt a lot and I still continue to do the same, however I like some effective Pinterest strategies with you all so you can increase your blog traffic as well. the pros get an average of 100,000 to 300,000 clicks per month!!
Why Should you Join Pinterest?
One thing that you need to understand about Pinterest is that it’s a cross between a search engine and a social media network.
It has the features of a social media network , allowing you to share, follow and message each other.
And like Google, Pinterest has ever-changing algorithms known as Smart Feed to display pins relevant to the users need.
The algorithms are driven with keywords which are used to identify the topic under consideration. So if you are a food blogger and have shown your interest in food recipes, Pinterest will try to fill up your home feed with topics relevant to that. And it will not only show pins from the people you follow, but from people all around the world.
Like any search engine the content you upload is online forever. Normally in a social media like Facebook, once your content has rolled the first page then its lost in the archives. But this wont happen in Pinterest, your pin would keep generating traffic for years, especially if you apply some Pinterest strategies.
Pinterest Strategies (FOR BEGINNERS & USERS)
So now that we know what Pinterest is, and why should you use it lets talk about the best Pinterest strategies to drive insane amount of traffic to your website. The success of driving traffic from Pinterest actually depends on the effective use and application of the social media network itself.
WE NEED TO TREAT IT LIKE A SEARCH ENGINE (WITH HUMAN LIKE CAPABILITIES).
The strategies I am about to share are not only for people who are just joining Pinterest, but also current users of Pinterest. Current users can also up their game of pinning and start getting more traffic through this medium as well.
So here it goes:
Pinterest Strategies #1 – SEO on Pinterest
As you know Pinterest is not just a social network, but also a search engine. And like any search engine, in order for your content to show up on the user’s page or in the search you need to use keywords.
There are millions of people sharing and pinning regularly everyday on Pinterest creating millions of pins. What you need to understand is you need to make your content stand out in this sea of pins. For that there should be a strategic implementation of keywords across the board.
How to apply SEO on Pinterest? Let’s get started –
This is the first and foremost thing to do. Find out the targeted keywords on Pinterest that people are mostly using in their searches. There is a simple way to actually do this exercise.
Go to the search bar on Pinterest > Type in a few keywords relevant to your niche in it > Use the suggestions from Pinterest search box.
Here is an example.
So I typed in Make Money in the search bar, then you can see a list of Pinterest keyword suggestions has rolled down. The ones in the beginning are the keywords you need to focus on.
Optimize your profile with keywords
Here are the places in your profile where oyu should add keywords
- Profile name
- Profile image – (use a constant picture throughout all your social channels and tag them with the relevant keywords)
Create boards relevant to your audience searches
In your blog you would have categorized your content to organize it effectively and make it more search friendly for your users. The same concept applies to when you are creating Pinterest boards.
You should create boards which are relevant with your niche. By this I mean to make boards which are relevant with what your potential audience would be searching for.
The niche I am working is blogging, social media and make money online. Here is a look at my boards for oyu to get a better understanding.
Pinterest allows you to create up to 500 boards, but I would suggest creating as many niche relevant boards as possible. This narrow focus would help your content get more impressions and eventually more followers.
Add keywords in board description
I would keep it short and tip the point here. When it comes to writing description for your boards, the best thing you can do is fill that description up with the relevant keywords separated with commas.
From my own personal experience this works best. Write a short description of what your followers would find in the board, but after that fill it up with keywords. Remember Pinterest is search engine and you want to make all your boards SEO friendly so it gets ranked well and appear on search results.
Add keywords in your pins descriptions
One of the most important places to incorporate SEO is in your pins. Your pins are actually the gateway to your blog, that’s how I look at them. So you want to make sure your pin appears in the search, on users smart feed and “Picked for you”.
So how can all this be achieved? Through keyword rich pin descriptions
Here what you need to do:
- Describe briefing what the users will find in the pin you have shared
- Add keywords in your description and as well as after it separated by commas
- Always add a call to action at the end of your description. What your readers to do once they see your pin.
Pinterest Strategies #2 – Create CLICK-WORTHY Pins
Pinterest is a medium to promote your blog and your content. But you aren’t the only one pinning on Pinterest. There are millions other users doing the same thing. This is the reason you need to create pins that stand out among st the clutter and persuade someone to actually click on it.
Here how do design click worthy pins:
- I would suggest you to use CANVA to create click worthy pins. It’s a platform that easily allows you to design your pins for various platforms (PINTEREST, FACEBOOK, BLOGS, and INSTAGRAM).
- Create vertical pins (size 700 pixels x 1200 Pixels). They appear much bigger on Pinterest and are shared way more than horizontal pins
- Use colors that are light, warm and bright. Dark or cool images are either ignored, or suppressed in the background
- Employ keywords thoroughly in the pin
- Create engaging and interesting headlines to lure readers in and encourage them to click your pin
- Use a variation of font styles and sizes
- Keep the background blank or very simple you don’t want to clutter your pin
- Insert your website link or logo in the pin
One thing I learn in my marketing and sales experience is KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID). This rule simple applies perfectly in Pinterest. Don’t go overboard while creating a pin, where you add so much that readers sway away from your pin.
Pinterest Strategies #3 – JOIN GROUP BOARDS
I CANNOT emphasize enough how important group boards are for you to increase your traffic.
As the name implies, group boards consist of hundred, even thousands of followers, so once you share you pin on the group board you will get massive exposure. Not only will your pin might been seen by the followers, but if someone actually likes or re-pins it, then this could lead to exposure of even a wider scale.
THUS they will help you to increase your reach, re-pins and followers, hence all translating into more traffic.
SO you should join as many group boards that are relevant to your niche, and then develop a pining strategy to reap benefits from them.
Once you join a group board make it a point to do the following:
- Share your pin daily on them
- Re-pin other users pins more than yours to increase your ranking in the group board
- Pin in intervals so it doesn’t look spam-my.
Pinterest Strategies #4 – PIN DAILY & REGULARLY
The key to be successful on Pinterest also depends on the number of times you pin.
So make it a point to pin regularly.
Pinterest sees and hears everything! Yes this is true but not in a creepy way. I believe Pinterest can see you activity on Pinterest and then reward you according to your participation. So if you are active on Pinterest you will be rewarded by sharing your pins and boards with other users.
How often should you pin?
Well the more the better! You should aim to pain at least 100 pins daily. But REMEMBER to pin in intervals so you the Pinterest algorithms don’t consider you as spam.
The best is to pin 4 pins at a time, then give a break of few minutes before you pin again.
Pinterest Strategies #5 – PIN MANUALLY
While I was still new to Pinterest I came across to a book called Pinteresting Strategies by Carly Campbell. And I must say she really changed the pinning game for me. This is not an exaggeration, since I started employing her suggested strategies my traffic literally doubled. I had a very low traffic initially but I actually saw her strategies working out well for my blog.
One of the things that really attracted me most about her book was her pinning mechanism. Rather than suggesting the automation pinning tools (board booster or tailwind), Carly suggested to pin manually.
And her logic to encourage manually pinning is bang on.
According to her, if you pin through a scheduler, your pin is considered as a NEW pin. Hence it would eventually rank low in the Pinterest algorithms. This is why she suggested to pin manually.
Here my way to pin manually
